APRIL

Wilson & Scott chargehand Sean Trodden ran the 2010 London Marathon using one of our guaranteed entries and recorded a very impressive 3hours 36 minutes.

For a first time run at the distance you could say he was "A Virgin in the Virgin London Marathon". He is now collecting in his sponsorship money from friends and colleagues.

Employees and customers of WS are eligible to apply for one of the guaranteed places we are given each year in recognition of our long association with the London Marathon.

First Red Line for London Marathon

Wilson & Scott painted and removed a red line over the weekend of 23rd to 25th April for the London Marathon. The line, which is approximately the shortest route, has traditionally been painted in blue but this year the new sponsors Virgin Group asked it to be done in red. Whilst there were concerns that the red line would not show up as well as a blue one against the dark road surface, most of the elite runners professed themselves happy with the line and agreed that it assisted them to keep on the most economical course.

The original Blue Line in London was first painted in 1985 and Wilson & Scott were responsible for all 25 years up to 2009. And now we have the first Red Line coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the London Marathon in 2010.

WS to support American Football Team

Wilson & Scott are pleased to announce their support of the Farnham Knights Youth Football Team for the 2010 Season. The winners of the 2009 British Championships the Knights Youth team offer aspiring young players the chance to succeed in a high profile but minority sport in the UK. The contribution from WS will help to pay for equipment and facilities for their training. Players often move on to the senior team when old enough and both teams provide players to the national squads who play in Europe. The photo shows the team’s Quarter Back, Joe Thompson, holding aloft the trophy they won last season. Joe has also played for the Great Britain team on several occasions.

Wilson & Scott is keen to contribute to clubs and societies associated with members of staff throughout the UK and to the benefit of young persons through sport and other activities. The Company has supported football teams, scout groups and other social activities by way of donations of cash or time and will continue to do so.

A Red Line for the London Marathon

After 25 years of painting a blue line around the route of the London Marathon (and many others too) Wilson & Scott is getting ready to paint the first red one this month.

With the Virgin Group as the new major Sponsor for the marathon it was to be expected that they would want a red line to match their corporate colour. The red paint has been made and tested so we’re ready to go.

The marathon line is an indication to the runners of the shortest route around the course. Essential for elite competitors hoping to break a world record but also useful for those runners of a lesser calibre who may want to ensure they don’t run a single metre further than they need to. Our team will be out on the night of Friday 23rd April painting the 26 miles of line in preparation for the big event on the 25th. But for us the removal of the line is the larger task and this takes place as soon as the last runner has crossed the start line on Blackheath. It will take several vehicles, a dozen operatives and about 8 hours of hard work to water-jet away the line so London’s streets will be back to normal for the Monday traffic.
